On Friday 18th September the WA Tidy Town Judges visited Bridgetown and Greenbushes. The judges were following up on the nominations we submitted in the categories of “Culture & Heritage” and “Young Legends” reflecting the hard work and efforts of the Bridgetown Historical Society and Blackwood Youth Action respectively.
The Bridgetown Historical Society nomination was focused on their efforts and achievements in the following key areas:
- To modernize the Bridgetown Police Station Museum
- To take history to the people
- To actively tell the story of indigenous culture and heritage
The judges were impressed with the achievements and progress of the Bridgetown Historical Society, in particular the new initiatives of “Come for a Cuppa” (history talks) and “History from the Grave (guided cemetery tours.
The Blackwood Youth Action nomination was focused on this group’s long standing achievements in the following areas:
- Supporting geographically isolated, at risk and marginalised youth
- Delivering a social enterprise function to fund activities and employment of a local youth services coordinator and service delivery
- Identify and develop a suitable building as a base for activities include a drop in center for youth
The judges expressed a high opinion of the existing BYA centre and appreciated the potential to grow service delivery in the proposed new centre (former ‘officer in charge’ house on Steere Street) as well YEOp Shop.
The judges were also impressed with the efforts of the Greenbushes Community Garden members on visiting the Garden. The judges also visited Greenbushes Primary School where they were able to see the progress students were making on their Noongar language studies and the Greenbushes Community Resource Centre which played an important part in supporting the town during the COVID-19 shut-down.
The WA Tidy Town awards will be announced at the annual Tidy Towns Ceremony on Friday 27 November 2020 and hopefully some, if not all, of our nominated groups and projects will be award recipients on the day.
