The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes has been recognized as one of Western Australia's leading local governments in terms of financial reporting. In the Auditor-General's Financial Audit Results - Local Government report for 2021/22, the Shire attained a "best practice" status, marking an annual evaluation of the financial performance within the sector.
Auditor-General Caroline Spencer noted an increasing presence of weaknesses in financial management and information system controls across the local government sector. However, she praised the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes for its promptness and the excellence of its financial statements.
Within the report, the Shire achieved a position in the top 20 local governments. These report findings were presented in the State Parliament earlier this month.
Western Australia has nearly 150 local governments, and while the Financial Audit Results - Local Government report is an annual publication, this year marked the first time local governments were rated on their financial reporting and financial control practices.
The assessment of financial reporting involved a thorough examination of five key criteria:
- Timeliness of financial statement submission.
- Quality of financial statements and accompanying notes.
- Excellence of working papers.
- Resolution of accounting-related issues.
- Availability of essential staff members.
Acting CEO, Phil St John said, “It was a great team effort, but particular recognition is owed to our Director Corporate Services , Michelle Larkworthy. Michelle's exceptional diligence and attention to detail has been, and continues to be, invaluable, in achieving this excellent result”.
