Funded by the Emergency Services Levy, The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes has taken receival of 4 new Fire Fighting vehicles in readiness for the upcoming bushfire season.

The Greenbushes Light Tanker is a new addition to the Shire’s Fleet and boasts a 500 litre Water Tank, full Crew Protection and Deluge System for use in the event of a burn over scenario, modern lockers and storage areas enabling more tools, equipment, PPE and Deployment Kit Bags to be stowed securely, enhanced medical equipment and defibrillator and a crew welfare locker with a fridge. This unit will be housed at the Greenbushes fire Station and support the Greenbushes 3:4 Urban Tanker.

The Wandillup and Winnejup IVECO 1.4 Tankers are two of three replacement vehicles, with the third for the Sunnyside Brigade arriving within the next few days. These 1.4 Tankers will replace the three aged Landcruiser Light Tankers. These new vehicles carry 1,400 litres of water, have four-wheel drive capability, front, central and rear diff locks and self-inflating/deflating tyres, making them well very suited to the Shire’s landscape. They also have a front mounted monitor controlled by a joystick in the cab, two electric hose reels, large well organised and stocked lockers, a variable message board and the full Crew Protection and Deluge System.

The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes was one of the first areas to trial these vehicles earlier in the year. Volunteer Firefighters put them through their paces, used them at real incidents and were able to recommend changes and upgrades they would like implemented. DFES and IVECO took these suggestions onboard, with all three appliances having had the recommended alterations. Volunteers from the three brigades were trained in the full use of the appliances by members of the DFES Fleet and Equipment Services Team and have all been assessed as being competent to operate them at a bushfire.

If you can picture yourself driving or operating any of these appliances, or the range of other Firefighting Vehicles in the Shire’s fleet and are interested in becoming a Volunteer Bushfire Fighter, please contact the Acting Community Emergency Services Manager, Bob McCance during working hours on 0427 267 624 or via email RMcCance@bridgetown.wa.gov.au.
